How this tool changes learning in a way that isn't possible without technology
Using an online calendar students will set up a semester plan for home, work and school.
Google Calendar
Students are able to access their to-do list from anywhere and make changes that are automatically recorded. In the past, they would have to make sure they had their calendar or planner on them at all times, but now, since everyone carries a cell phone it makes planning, organizing and coordination easier.
In order to understand how they are using their time, students will take an online quiz about time management to start thinking about how they can better plan each semester
surveymonkey
Using an online survey tool allows for students to see their results in a graphic way and be able to better visualize where they are wasting the most time. The online quiz format also allows for easier statistical compilation for the moderator of the program.
Procrastination is the bane of any student's academic success. Students will create a word cloud or personal procrastination techniques. The techniques they engage in most often will appear larger than the rest.
wordle
Allowing students to create a visual display of their procrastination techniques that requires them to make some in different colors/sizes is more effective than just a traditional paper/pen list. They are able to add to the wordcloud at any point and pull it up on their computer or phone in order to remind themselves of the ways in which they are procrastinating. Since it is a cloud platform there are no concerns about it getting lost/tossed/etc.
Thinking about the different time management techniques that have been taught in the unit students will create a cartoon that synthesizes what they have learned and how they will use the techniques to achieve greater academic success.
pixton
Using a comic generator instead of a traditional written paper that simply summarizes what they have learned allows students to become more tactilely engaged with what they are doing. Furthermore, this type of exercise also forces them to think about the learned material in a different way since they now have to use both text and images to get their message across to their audience.
